It was established in March 23, 1983 as one of the national center of excellence in the basic sciences. It also supports instruction, research and extension programs in the Philippines and the Asian region. It offers the four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with specializations in cell and molecular biology, ecology, genetics, microbiology, plant biology, systematics, wildlife biology, and zoology. Its graduate program is offered through the Graduate School. It began operations on December 1, 1983 and in 1999, the Commission on Higher Education confirmed its status as a Center of Excellence in Biology. The institute is composed of five divisions namely on animal biology, environmental biology, genetics and molecular biology, microbiology, and plant biology.
